Behind the Lyrics: Live While You Can

The video for "Live While You Can" has debuted, and many are telling us they are really connecting with the lyrics. That is a huge compliment, and we sincerely appreciate it. Hey, this is Dave, and I'm going to share what I was thinking about when writing the lyrics and what the song means to me. But first, here are the lyrics to "Live While You Can":

I like whiskey
I like to party
Come on baby
Let's get it started, yeah

You build your own cage
You carve your own jail
You lock your own door
You drive your own nail
You get one time around
You've got to understand
You build your own prison
Gotta live while you can

That's why I'm saying…
I like whiskey
I like to party
Come on baby
Let's get it started

They say you drive too fast
Say you're outta control
They say you play it too loud
Cuz you like rock n roll
You get one time around
They've got to understand
You play it too loud
Just to live while you can
Gotta live while you can

That's why I'm saying…
I like whiskey
I like to party
Come on baby
Let's get it started

You carve your own jail
You tie yourself down
You drive your own nail
You get one time around
Gotta live while you can, you can, you can…

That's why I'm saying…
I like whiskey
I like to party
Come on baby
Let's get it started

==============

Let me start by saying most songs I write have more than one message, and I'm not nearly the first to do this. It really comes from the early roots of rock n' roll... even the phrase "rock n' roll" itself refers to sex!

The first message of the song hits right out of the gate... I like whiskey, I like to party, Come on baby, Let's get it started! It's a party song, and if nothing else is remembered, that is what sticks. We have people tell us, "I really like that whiskey song." Hey, mission accomplished!

Those connecting with the lyrics on a bit deeper level are really getting my message from the verses. There is always someone telling us what we can't do. And usually, we're more guilty of doing that to ourselves than anyone else. That is what the first verse hits on. The second verse has the same theme, but it goes back to others telling us what we can't or shouldn't do. Don't listen. Live your own life. Don't let the fears of others or even your own fears hold you back.

You want to live full-time in an RV? Go for it! I've got some friends doing that very thing right now. You want to take a year and bike across South America? I've got some family members doing that right now, too! The point is, we all know someone who would tell us "that's a crazy idea". So what? You get one time around. Don't live with regret. Live While You Can!
